The Government are currently considering the process for the development of a gas pipeline to Sligo from the Corrib pipeline. The Western Development Commission (WDC) has emphasised that the chosen route should provide further opportunities to expand the gas grid in the West in the future. The WDC believe that a pipeline to Sligo which goes through the centre of Connacht will give greater value for money, in the longer term, than a route via the Ox mountains.

“The WDC welcomed the government decision to bring gas to Sligo, however we are very concerned that the route of the pipeline should be one which will provide the greatest benefits to the people and the economy of the region” said CEO Lisa McAllister. “There is little opportunity for spurs to towns in central Connacht from a pipeline which goes via the Ox mountains. Such a route would represent a missed opportunity for those towns.”

As part of the government commitment to balanced regional development the WDC emphasises that it is necessary to invest in infrastructure in less developed regions to stimulate development. Given the importance of energy infrastructure in underpinning development, the WDC has asked that Minister Aherne give due consideration to the declining population in large parts of the Western Region and to the need for development to reverse that decline.

In the future, the availability of gas supply will be taken for granted by consumers and industrial users. The lack of gas infrastructure throughout the West will become a further disincentive to investment, thus worsening existing disparities. The WDC believes that gas infrastructure can make an important contribution to the maintenance and development of the regional economy.
