Boating accident on Lough Corrib

Boating accident on Lough Corrib

A 28 year old single man has died following a boating accident on Lough Corrib on Saturday.

Two men from County Clare had been fishing on Lough Corrib from a boat today at approximately 1.45pm when they landed on Cannaver, a small island on Lough Corrib for lunch. While there the boat drifted out onto the lake, one of the men attempted to swim out and recover the boat but got into difficulties.

The second man raised the alarm and a search got underway comprising local people, a Coastguard helicopter, divers from Galway Sub - Aqua club and Gardai.

The body was recovered by divers from Galway Sub - Aqua club at 4pm and taken by Coastguard helicopter to University College Hospital, Galway where death was pronounced.

The man has been named as Barry Quinn from Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare.
