Number of visitors to Ireland grew by 1.3% in 2002

Number of visitors to Ireland grew by 1.3% in 2002

According to the Central Statistics Office there were 6,065,000 overseas visitors to Ireland in the year 2002, compared with 5,990,000 in 2001, an increase of 1.3%. The number of overseas visitors on cross-channel routes grew by 2.9% while the number on continental routes increased 0.3%. The number of visitors on transatlantic routes decreased by 10.2%.

The number of visits abroad by Irish residents in the year 2002 was 4,634,000 compared with 4,216,000 in 2001, an increase of 9.9%. The figures show a large shift in destinations with trips on continental routes up by 17.5% and down 15.2% on trans-Atlantic routes.

The expenditure figures for 2002 show a net inflow of EUR 29 million. Earnings from visitors to the country amounted to EUR 3,985 million while expenditure by Irish visitors abroad amounted to EUR 3,956 million.
