With the summer bathing season just around the corner, Irish Water Safetys National Water Safety Awareness Week, in association with Captain Birds Eye is highlighting the importance of learning to be safe in, on and around water.

Between Monday 26th May and the June 2nd Bank Holiday, Irish Water Safety asks everybody to bring water safety in to their homes and ensure that all members of their families are made aware of the risks surrounding water. We had 62 accidental drownings in Ireland last year and alarmingly, eighty-six children aged fourteen and under drowned accidentally in the last ten years*, so we particularly call on parents to ensure children know how to behave around water.

Children are naturally curious around water be it a slurry pit, a bucket or open water and an awareness campaign targeting children will air on national and local radio throughout the week. In supporting our aim to target children, Captain Birds Eye, being the wise seafarer that he is has plenty of tips for children off to the beach or pool for a splash up -

  • Young children should not be allowed near water unsupervised

  • Ensure other members of the family can swim and have adequate water confidence to save themselves if they do fall in to the water

  • All members of the family should wear a lifejacket whenever they are engaged in Aquatic Activities and pursuits.

  • Ensure that all the family have suitable protective clothing, as the commonest cause of drowning is incapacitation caused by the cold.

Swim safely with Captain Birds Eye and arrange your swimming and water safety week camps for the summer ahead. Irish Water Safety has an extensive summer programme of swimming and water safety courses at rivers, lakes and beachfronts throughout Ireland, commented Frank Nolan, Chairman Irish Water Safety.

No matter what aquatic activity or pursuit that you or your family are involved in we recommend that you get appropriate and relevant training.
