Total Lunar Eclipse visible from Galway (weather permitting!)Total Lunar Eclipse visible from Galway (weather permitting!)The first lunar eclipse of 2003 occurs in the early hours of Friday morning 16 May (late Thursday 15 May in US). This event is a total eclipse of the Moon which will be visible from Europe as well as North and South America, Africa and Antarctica. During such an eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red to dark brown. The eclipse will commence at about 3am (02:00 GMT), reach total eclipse at about 4am and end at about 6am. An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The red colour is due to the sun shining through the earth's atmosphere.
