Air Wales announce new Galway - Glasgow route

Air Wales announce new Galway - Glasgow route

Update (11 Nov 2003): Air Wales have withdrawn from the Glasgow/Galway route. An Air Wales spokesperson commented:

When we announced our intention to launch this service we were unaware that any other airlines were interested in servicing the route, or indeed had imminent plans to start it. We've since discovered that our Celtic cousins at Aer Arann were themselves very close to launching the same route, and of course, it's simply not viable for two airlines to run this service. We've taken this decision out of respect for Aer Arann and wish them every success with its launch.

Air Wales is committed to serving the best interests of travellers to and from Ireland , and we're confident that this decision is in the public's best interest. We are still committed to the expansion of the Air Wales network in Ireland and will continue to service our existing routes between Cork and Dublin .

Air Wales, the national Welsh airline, have announced today Tuesday the addition of a new direct service linking Galway and the West of Ireland to Glasgow. The new service will commence on Monday December 8th 2003. Initially the service will operate Monday to Friday departing Glasgow International at 12.00 arriving in Galway at 13.15, departing Galway at 13.45 to arrive in Glasgow at 15.00.

Air Wales is the national Welsh airline, and have been operating since 1999. Based at Swansea airport, they currently operate between Dublin, Cork, Cardiff, Swansea, and Plymouth. This new route is a further step in Air Wales route expansion plan, with an additional new route also launching shortly from Swansea to Amsterdam. Air Wales recently added a further 48 seat ATR 42 to their existing fleet of three aircraft providing additional capacity. Air Wales are renowned for their competitive fares throughout their route network.

According to Sarah Callan, Air Wales Marketing Manager (Ireland) "we are delighted to offer this new service to Glasgow from the West of Ireland. Galway - Glasgow is perceived to be a key route in the continued development of the airline".

The announcement of a direct service to Glasgow is an enormous boost to industry in the region, to both Galway and the West of Ireland, said Joe Higgins, Chairman, Galway Airport. The service will be of great benefit to both the tourism and corporate sectors. There are strong traditional links between Scotland and the West of Ireland It is now up to local business interests and the travelling public to support this route to ensure the service is retained and grown to additional daily flights. I look forward to working with Air Wales to develop another successful service out of Galway.
