Angling

Angler in Corrib River; (c) 2000 Joe Desbonnet

Angling in Galway comprises both river and sea angling.

Its a sport enjoyed by visitors and Galwegians all year round in both its forms.

The different species caught from sea angling depend on the time of year. Any potential sea angler who has seen the classic film 'Man of Aran' will know that traditionally shark are to be hunted in the waters around the Aran Islands.

The Western Fisheries Region is famous for its brown trout loughs, rivers and streams on the Corrib system.

The rivers renowned for good brown trout include the Clare River which flows into Lough Corrib. Fish taken from this river in recent times weighed in at over 7lb and 8lb, weights which must be a stimulus for any fisherman worthy of the title.
