Venue: Bank of Ireland Theatre, NUI Galway A Distant Country Called YouthCompany: Andrew McCarthyA Distant Country Called Youth powerfully illuminates a series of letters by Tennessee Williams to his family, friends, lovers, agents, producers and literary luminaries. Written over a 20-year period, the letters follow Williams from his youth in Clayton to his first triumph on Broadway. The Glass Menagerie's famously introverted heroine, Laura, was inspired by Williams' sister Rose, whose mental deterioration is chronicled in heartbreaking detail in the play through her brother's letters. Andrew McCarthy has appeared in many Broadway and off Broadway productions most notably in Sideman and The Boys of Winter. A well-known TV and film actor he has appeared in Mulholland Falls, The Joy Luck Club, Pretty in Pink, Less than Zero and St. Elmos' Fire amongst others. Aurélia's Oratorio, a bewitching feast of invention and magical adventure, is created and directed by Victoria Thiérrée Chaplin and stars her daughter Aurélia Thiérrée (sister of James, whose Junebug Symphony and La Viellée des Abysses received their Irish premieres at Galway Arts Festival).
Venue: Black Box Theatre The Small ThingsCompany: Paines PloughThe last two people left in the world. They have to speak to stay alive. Who will have the last word? Two houses, perched on top of mountains, stare at each other across a deep valley. A man and a woman talk about the small things ? parquet floor zigzagging down corridors, the memory of mother's breasts, brown sauce and soggy chips. But these minutiae disguise a bigger story of brutality and unfaltering loyalty which emerges horrifically through the chit-chat. Enda Walsh is one of the most innovative and thrilling playwrights of his generation following global success with his plays Disco Pigs and Bedbound. Paines Plough present the Irish premiere of The Small Things, directed by Vicky Featherstone - an aching exploration of language and our need for words to survive.

Henri Oguike is known for intricate, rhythmic choreography and his instinctive translation of the moods and themes of music into exhilarating movement. His rousing Signal sets five performers against the pounding rhythms of Japan's Taiko drums. Inspired by the anthemic music of Jimi Hendrix, the archetype of rock excess, Rui Horta has drawn on the individual strengths of the Phoenix dancers to explore personal limits and the fine line between individual expression and burnout in Can You See Me. Artistic Director Darshan Singh Bhuller's Eng-er-land takes us through the madness of Friday night in Anytown, England. Pushing the relationship between live performance and film, the stage is flooded with multimedia projections of a virtual city. KMA's computer generated graphics respond and react to the dancers in a true integration of technology, theatricality and raw physicality.
