Contech Medical expansion to create 80 new jobs in Galway

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney, T.D., announced today (Thursday 4th March 2004) that Contech Medical Inc., a leading medical device manufacturing and packaging company serving the global medical device industry, is to expand its Irish operation, with the support of IDA Ireland. Contech Medical International Limited at Parkmore Business Park West, Galway, is to create a further 80 new jobs, bringing total employment to 118 people when fully implemented within four years. It is planned to have up to 40 of the new jobs filled by mid-2004.

The majority of the new jobs will be in the operations area, with other opportunities in engineering, quality control and administration. The expansion is the result of additional out-sourcing business from both existing and new customers in Europe and the US. The 15,000 sq. ft. facility is to be extended to 35,000 sq. ft. and will include further clean-room, office and warehousing space.

The Tánaiste, welcoming the investment, said, "This is an acknowledgement of the Galway facility by the parent company and will significantly increase its value and role in the company's worldwide business. The management and workforce are to be congratulated for their commitment which led to the facility developing the capability to produce higher value products and provide specialised packaging solutions to the medical devices marketplace."

The Galway facility was established in 1994 to provide sub-contract support to the medical device industry throughout Europe. It implements a rigorous local sourcing programme and now sources the major portion of its raw materials from local Irish suppliers.

Contech Medical Inc. is a privately owned company and the No.1 guidewire dispenser supplier in the world - a product that removes the potential for guidewire damage during distribution. A guidewire is used for catheter insertion during cardiovascular procedures. Contech produces a wide variety of medical devices including guidewire, catheter and stent dispensers, fluid delivery systems and orthopaedic kits. Contech was established in 1987 in Providence Rhode Island, US, and currently employs 90 people. It serves many of the global medical device companies throughout Europe and Ireland.

Mr. Tom Burke, General Manager of the Galway facility, said, "this expansion will provide substantial benefits for us here in Galway. We thank our management team and our workforce for their dedication in developing our operation, which has resulted in our shift to the higher value activities. This will greatly assist our additional business from leading global medical devices companies, many of which are already our valued customers."

The company President Mr. Ray Byrnes and Vice President Mr. Bob DiPetrillo outlined the following: "Contech Medical US decided to expand into Ireland in 1994.
