Burren Spring Conference 2005

Burren Spring Conference 2005

Dolmens little and large, old and new, will be among the issues debated at a conference to be held in the Burren on February 4th to 6th next. The conference, to be opened by the legendary conservationist and educator, Professor David Bellamy, is themed Building a new Burren. The vexed issue of do it yourself dolmen building in the region will be the subject of a talk by Prof. Timothy E. Jones, Dean of the Burren College of Art, while Dr. Ann Lynch of the Dept. of the Environment will look at one of Irelands best known dolmens in a talk titled Poulnabrone Managing an Icon.

The impressive line-up of speakers includes Dr. Carleton Jones, author of a recent book on the archaeology of the Burren and Aran Islands, Dr. Patrick Wallace, Director of the National Museum of Ireland, and Dr. David Drew, an expert on the karst geology of the Burren, who will speak about the caves of the region. Natural history lovers will be catered for by Dr. Sharon Parr, a Burren-based research scientist who has produced a fascinating habitat map of the region, and Dr. Liam Lysaght, Wildlife Officer with the Heritage Council. Simon Webb, an authority on the management of limestone habitats in the UK, and a frequent visitor to the Burren, will discuss the management of karst landscapes, and generally contribute to what should be an informed and enthusiastic debate on the issue.

This promises to be not only a highly entertaining weekend, but also one of great practical significance in addressing the challenges and opportunities facing the Burren. For those people with an interest in - and commitment to - the Burren and its future, this is an event not to be missed. A limited number of places are still available; to book contact Ailsa at the Burren College of Art, Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare on (065) 7077200, e-mail ailsa@burrencollege.ie details also available on www.burrencollege.ie
