www.factsonline.ie is a new information service for business in the water-based tourism and leisure sector. The portal, developed by the Marine Institute, provides access to information on training, research and development, funding opportunities, marketing information and support services for businesses in the water-based tourism and leisure sector. " With seven government departments and over 40 government agencies playing a support role in this sector, knowing who to talk to or where to find information can cause confusion. www.factsonline.ie aims to help business find out 'who's who' and 'what we can do for you'" said Ms Anne Wilkinson, Marine Institute, at the launch of the Institute's new service in Ornamore, Galway.

"Ireland's marine environment provides a significant resource for all kinds of water-based activities, which through tourism and recreational activity contribute EUR600 million to the national income. We hope the portal will raise awareness of the many opportunities for support that exist within the water-based tourism and leisure sector. We also hope that providing this information on one website will encourage synergies between the network of commercial enterprises that exist to service the needs of the sector", said Ms Wilkinson.

The new website, www.factsonline.ie includes details of:

  • support agencies which have a direct support role and information on the type of support offered

  • R&D agencies involved in coastal, marine, freshwater and socio-economic and resource management research and development

  • Representative Associations, both commercial and recreational bodies, which provide support to the broad spectrum of water-based tourism and leisure interests

  • Training programmes and courses available for the sector, covering broad-based management skills training to specialist recreational courses being offered by the various colleges, institutes, universities and outdoor education centres

  • Hyperlinks and contact details to all the above support bodies.

The data on the website was supplied by relevant government departments, semi-state agencies and leisure groups and compiled by the Marine Institute, and can be up-dated when necessary. If you would like to add information to the website, please contact facts (at) marine.ie
