Galway United Football Club have appointed Mr Nick Leeson as the club¹s new Commercial Manager.

Nick Leeson, the man most closely associated with the collapse of Barings Bank in 1995, will take up the position next week. Mr Leeson has lived in Galway with his wife and family for the past two and a half years.

"I am really looking forward to the challenge. I am a very keen football fan and am looking forward to working with Galway United.

"We set up home in Galway over two years ago and have settled here. I have been looking for a new challenge.

"It is inevitable I will always be associated with Barings Bank but after everything which has happened, I have moved on and I hope other people have as well.

The appointment of Mr Leeson is one of a number of developments implemented by First Division Galway United recently, including the establishment of a new Board of Directors drawn from the business, sporting and political fraternity of Galway.

The Chairman of Galway United, John Fallon, said that Mr Leeson would be taking up his new position next week after being appointed at a meeting of the Board of Directors on Friday afternoon.

"It is impossible to ignore the events which have made Nick Leeson known worldwide. But long after the fanfare about his appointment has passed, Nick Leeson will be tasked with the demanding job of implementing a series of commercial initiatives aimed at developing Galway United FC.

"The Board's confidence in Nick Leeson delivering on these tasks is the reason he has been appointed to this position.

"Life has moved on for everyone since the happenings of ten years ago. The Board of Galway United wish Nick Leeson the best of luck in his new position and sincerely hope that it is an appointment that is mutually beneficial.

"The primary concern here is the future strong development of Galway United FC and to that end a series of initiatives have been drawn up which will be driven by the new Commercial Manager,² said John Fallon.

Last Friday, Galway United won 1 - 0 at home courtesy of a 91st minute goal from young striker, Barry Moran. The Club are at home again next Friday night, April 22nd, when Kildare County are visitors to Terryland Park. Kick off is 7.30pm
