Taibhdhearc

Taibhdhearc

The Taidbhdearc theatre is situated in Middle Street and is the premier Irish language theatre in the country. Established in the 1920's and opened by Hilton Edwards and Michael Mac Liammoir, it was here that the famous Irish actress Siobhan McKenna made her debut. Other great literary figurs in Galway who were heavily involved with the Taibhdhearc included novelist Walter Macken and Lady Augusta Gregory. The Walter Macken play, Mungo's Mansions, which is set in nearby Buttermilk Lane, was performed here in the early days. Since then this theatre has played host to the brightest and the best theatrical productions in the country.

The Taibhdhearc's official web site is http://www.iol.ie/~taibh
