Train

Train

The train is the ideal way of traveling from Dublin to Galway. The journey time is about 3 hours. A bar and restaurant service is available on most trains. Return trip tickets vary from €22.50 - €38.00 depending on the the time of week (2003 prices).

Towns serviced along the route include Athenry, Ballinasloe, Athlone, Tullamore and Kildare. There are no direct routes to other cities.

Timetables

The following times are known to be accurate in January 2003 and are valid until 3 June 2003. But confirmation close to date of travel is advised.

Galway-Dublin

Early train: 0515 Mon, 0520 Tue-Fri.

Mon-Sat: 0745, 1100, 1510, 1808.

Sun: 0835, 1350, 1445, 1620, 1805.

Journey time is approx 3 hours. Trains terminate at Heuston Station, Dublin.

Dublin-Galway

Mon-Sat: 0720, 1055, 1430, 1650, 1905.

Sun: 0905, 1405, 1850, 2040.

Journey time is approx 3 hours. Trains depart from Heuston Station.

Travel Tips:

  • Arrive at least half an hour early. Many trains (especially those leaving from Dublin on Friday and from Galway on Sunday) are popular and seats are not guaranteed.

  • Frequent weekend travelers can avail of the Weekender Card. This enables the holder to avail of substantial discounts.

  • Much of the Galway / Dublin route is a single rail line. Consequently trains often wait at stations for oncoming trains to overtake. These delays can add as much as 30 minutes to the journey.

  • Check the Iarnrod Eireann (Irish Rail) web site for up-to-date information on timetables and disruptions to service.
